Students will be exposed to computer science, health science, machining and manufacturing, agriculture, engineering, carpentry, criminal justice, and family and consumer sciences. This broad introduction class will help students find a program that perhaps they may choose as a career choice after high school.

9th, 10th Grade - .5 Practical Art credit

This is an introductory course preparing students who are interested in machining, construction, robotics, and manufacturing. Students will engage in project-based learning lessons with hands-on activities to reinforce the content. Units of study include industrial shop safety, math specific to measurement, the applications of precision measurement tools, manufacturing processes, materials and their applications, mechanical fasteners, manufacturing mechanics, basic electrical circuits and measurement, basic blueprints/schematic reading and drawing.

Students are responsible for the cost of proper work clothes, $25 shop fee and project fees (amount TBD).

The course is intended for students who are interested in the many rewarding careers in the construction industry. These students should possess characteristics such as dedication to hard work, pride in a job-well-done, an overall good work ethic and also the ability to be productive alone and also while working with others toward a common goal. Students will learn about and use basic hand tools and power tools with much emphasis on maintenance and safe operation of these tools. They will learn about standard lumber, engineered lumber, nails, fasteners, sheathing materials and various other building materials that are utilized in the construction industry. Carpentry students will also gain a better understanding of Math practices that are commonly used in the construction industry.  The course also utilizes the Carpentry Career Connections curriculum and completes the Industry Recognized Credential (IRC).

10th Grade - 1 Practical Art Credit

Prerequisite: Must have passed Carpentry Core with a 70%. Students are responsible for the cost of proper work clothes, $25 shop fee and project fees (amount TBD).

This course will build on the skills learned in Carpentry Core.  Students utilize basic hand tools and power tools with much emphasis on maintenance and safe operation of these tools.  The curriculum will cover various building materials and concepts that are utilized in the construction industry. Students will gain experience on heavier equipment and complete hands-on projects that will further develop their skills to prepare them for Carpentry 1.  Carpentry students will also gain a better understanding of math practices that are commonly used in the construction industry.  Must Pass OSHA Safety within first three weeks of the class, ineligible to be in shop until passed, and must have proof of current insurance and medical form on file.

11th, 12th Grade – 2 Practical Art credits

Requirements: Must have passed Fundamentals of Carpentry with a 70%. Students will be bussed to the building site regardless of weather conditions. Students are responsible for the cost of proper work clothes, $25 shop fee and project fees (amount TBD).

This course is designed to prepare the students for entry level skills for different types of construction work. They will be introduced to reading a tape measure, working with wood and metal framing, installing and finishing sheetrock, concrete work, and other areas of the construction field. The Carpentry 1 course is in partnership with Career Connections. The course curriculum follows Career Connections guidelines, which are competency-based and includes written and performance evaluations. Career Connections provides a link between the students and industry; therefore, providing students with future employment opportunities. The course also utilizes the Carpentry Career Connections curriculum and Industry Recognized Credential (IRC).  Students will have the opportunity to obtain OSHA 10 and Forklift certifications in this class as well. Must Pass OSHA Safety within first three weeks of the class, ineligible to be in shop until passed, and must have proof of current insurance and medical form on file.

11th, 12th Grade – 2 Practical Art credits

Prerequisite: Carpentry 1 passed with an "80%" average or by teacher recommendation and must be able to read a tape measure within 1/16 of an inch. Students are responsible for the cost of proper work clothes, $25 shop fee and project fees (amount TBD).

This course gives students hands-on experience in framing, exterior and interior finish work, sheetrock installation and finish, leadership roles, and other areas of the construction field. The Carpentry 2 course is in partnership with Career Connections and the Carpenters’ Union. These partnerships provide students with a more fulfilling future plus the pride in and demand for their proven craftsmanship. The course curriculum follows the Career Connections guidelines, which are competency-based and includes written and performance evaluations. Students will have the opportunity to obtain OSHA 10 and Forklift certifications in this class as well. 

Civil Engineering, Math Analysis and Trigonometry, and Business Courses are strongly recommended with this course. Must Pass OSHA Safety within first three weeks of the class, ineligible to be in shop until passed, and must have proof of current insurance and medical form on file.
